Smart Key Blamed for Man’s Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Death

February 15, 2011 – Queens, NY According to Safety Research, the Smart Key has been blamed for a man’s carbon monoxide poisoning death.  A lawsuit was filed against Toyota in November by a woman in Queens, New York, when her keyless entry system gave her no warning that her vehicle was still running when she got out of it and went inside. She claims that the vehicle’s engine is so quiet, it can’t be heard when it’s running.  The vehicle was left running in her home’s garage, with the tragic result of one man’s death from carbon monoxide poisoning. The woman said she has been left with debilitating injuries.

Another similar incident occurred back in August 2010 when a 29-year-old woman died and her boyfriend was seriously injured as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. Her vehicle was left running in the garage attached to their townhouse.  The Smart Key has also been linked to incidences of the vehicle rolling away, as in one case involving a traffic officer who was run over by his vehicle.  When a design or manufacturing flaw occurs in a product and it results in injuries to consumers, the product may be considered dangerous.
