Ski-Doo® Snowmobiles Recalled for Explosion Hazard

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), a voluntary recall has been issued for Ski-Doo® Snowmobiles by BRP US Inc., because of an explosion hazard. The Ski-Doo recall has been initiated because of a malfunction within the snowmobiles that causes electrostatic charges to build up and spark in the fuel tank when the vehicle’s engine is idling. The sparks may create an explosion that could result in injuries ranging from minor to serious, including the possibility of death.  BRP has thus far received 3 incident reports involving the recalled snowmobiles. All 3 involved a tank exploding and one resulted in minor burns to the face and hands of the user.

The Ski-Doo snowmobile models affected by this recall include:

  • The 2005 Expedition TUV 600 H.O. SDI;
  • The 2007 Skandic SWT V-800;
  • The 2008 Skandic SUV 600 H.O. SDI;
  • The 2008 Skandic SWT V-800;
  • The 2009 Skandic SWT V-800; and
  • The 2010 Skandic SWT V-800.

The recall affects about 1,000 vehicles. The snowmobiles were manufactured in Finland and sold nationwide between March 2004 and March 2010.  Consumers are advised to cease use of the defective snowmobiles immediately and contact any Ski-Doo® dealer for a free repair. Any models that were repaired under a previous recall (because of a laceration, fire or explosion hazard) must be repaired again. Anyone with questions or incidents to report can contact BRP or the CPSC. If you have sustained injuries because of this or another defective product, it would be in your best interest to contact a product liability lawyer immediately.
