Pedestrian and Cyclist Accident Fatalities Increase in New York City

If you’ve been injured in a pedestrian accident in New York City, you’re not alone. According to the New York Times, there has been a rise in pedestrian and bicyclist accident fatalities from July 2011 to June 2012 in the city.

New York has always been a bustling city that required a driver to have quick reflexes and good judgment. Many choose to walk or bike rather than drive or pay for a cab or public transportation. Because of the effects of motor vehicles on traffic and the environment, many people feel that more pedestrians and cyclists help keep New York a safer and healthier place.

Unfortunately, New York has become less safe for non-motorists these days. According to the data from the Mayor’s Management Report, 176 pedestrians and bicyclists were killed in traffic accidents this year, compared to 158 last year. The 176 pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities were the highest since fiscal year 2009 when there were 178 such fatalities.

Pedestrians and cyclists sometimes inadvertently put themselves at risk by not paying attention before crossing streets, turning, etc., but in many cases, injuries occur due to driver negligence. Drivers may be unaware of (or apathetic about) how to share the road with cyclists or pedestrians, and their impatience can lead to accidents. Distraction from cell phones and other electronic devices is also a big issue.

In most accidents of this kind, the pedestrian or cyclist takes the brunt of the injuries, and sometimes these injuries are serious or deadly. While some incidents may leave just minor bumps and bruises, in addition to fatalities, other serious consequences of these accidents may include head trauma, internal injuries, spinal damage and other major life-altering injuries.

In any accident, it’s important to examine the scene and determine who was at fault. If someone feels that he or she was injured due to someone else’s negligence, it’s important to seek the counsel of an accident attorney who can help recover compensation for damages like medical expenses, missed time from work and more.
