December 6, 2010 – Shirley, NY – The family of a man who has suffered severe brain damage has filed a lawsuit against the nursing home where he lived, CBSNewYork.com has reported. Robert Knowles, 59, was staying at Medford Multicare Center at the time of the incident. Knowles, a former truck driver, was a quadriplegic from a fall in 2007. He was mentally sharp before the incident at Medford Multicare Center last March. Last March, Knowles’ ventilator became dislodged and a warning signal began to sound. Nurses are accused of ignoring this warning for 24 minutes. A surveillance tape shows a nurse failing to respond to both the warning buzzer and a lighted computer grid. Meanwhile, Knowles was slowly suffocating in his room. “Nobody went to his room. She didn’t get up. She didn’t call anybody,” said Gladys Knowles, Robert Knowles’ wife. Robert Knowles has suffered severe brain damage and a seizure disorder as a result of what might be nursing home negligence. He is now being treated at his home. The lawsuit names 3 people who did not respond to the warning buzzer. A spokesperson for Medford Multicare declined to comment on the case, which is pending trial.
