Nerve-Damaged Patient Sues Neurosurgeon

December 6, 2010 – Belleville, IL – A woman is suing a neurosurgeon following a surgery that has left her with permanent nerve damage, The Record has reported.  In November 2008, Mary Dickerson went to Memorial Hospital of Belleville for a lumbar spinal surgery. The procedure was performed by Dr. William W. Sprich, with the assistance of nurse Mary Ann Klein.  After the surgery, Dickerson says she felt numbness in her feet and was unable to easily lift either of them. It was not until January 2009 that medical tests confirmed that Dickerson had suffered bilateral nerve damage.  Dickerson places the fault on Dr. Sprich, Klein and the medical facility for a failure to properly protect her nerves and nerve roots during surgery. Because of the negligence of the hospital staff, Dickerson states, she now suffers from foot drop, numbness and pain on both sides of her body. All of the symptoms are irreversible.  The lawsuit names Dr. Sprich, Klein, Memorial Hospital of Belleville and Memorial Hospital Foundation as defendants in the case. Dickerson is asking for more than $50,000 in damages from each of the 4 defendants. She says the damage caused by the defendants keeps her from walking normally, performing everyday tasks and enjoying life on a day-to-day basis.  A jury trial has been demanded for this case.
