E.Coli Risk in 1,200 Pounds of Ground Beef; Recall Issued

E.Coli Risk in 1,200 Pounds of Ground Beef; Recall IssuedRanchers Legacy Meat Co., of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, is recalling 1,200 pounds of ground beef products possibly contaminated with E.Coli, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced.

The products subject to the recall are packaged in plastic cryovac sealed packets and contain various weights of ground beef. All products that were produced on November 19, 2014 are subject to the recall.

During a routine inspection, FSIS inspection personnel discovered these products. The products that tested positive on November 21, 2014 were held at the establishment. The recalled products were produced on the same day and equipment as the positive product. Products were shipped for nationwide sales.

E.Coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause abdominal pain and cramps, dehydration and bloody diarrhea for 2 to 8 days (average of 3-4 days) after exposure to the organism. Most people recover in a week’s time, however, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Although it can occur in persons of any age, it is most common in children under the age of 5 and older adults. Symptoms are easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output. It is advised to seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.

The concern of FSIS and Ranchers Legacy Meat Co. are that some product may be frozen in consumer’s freezers. FSIS and the company have received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products as of yet. However, due to the time that is required to pinpoint an illness back to a food source, it is difficult to say if anyone has been sickened.
