Distracted Driving Still Serious Problem in New York and Country-Wide

December 19, 2011 – According to Medline Plus, distracted driving continues to be a serious problem, despite many motorists supporting efforts to stop texting while driving or talking on the cell phone. Although drivers are quite aware of the risks of distracted driving, a new survey finds that it doesn’t stop them from engaging in those activities. In fact, more than 75 percent of motorists willingly admit to answering phone calls or texting, not taking into consideration traffic conditions. Yet a third of those same drivers who engage in distracted driving behaviors indicate they wouldn’t feel safe if they were a passenger in a car and the driver was doing the same. Recently statistics were released from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that in 2010 there were 32,855 motorist fatalities. Of those, 3,092 deaths are attributed to driving while distracted. However the agency believes this number could be higher since it can’t always be proven that it was the cause of a fatal crash.  If you or a loved one was seriously or fatally injured as a result of distracted driving, you should consult with a New York car accident attorney. You may be entitled to compensation for the injuries suffered.
