Which U.S. Cities Have the Safest Drivers?

Do you live in a city that has some of the safest drivers in the U.S.? Allstate Insurance Company just released its annual “Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report,” which ranks the 200 largest cities according to the number of car crashes. 

The top 10 safest cities for driving were: 

  1. Sioux Falls, S.D.
  2. Boise, Idaho
  3. Fort Collins, Colo.
  4. Madison, Wis.
  5. Lincoln, Neb.
  6. Huntsville, Ala.
  7. Chandler, Ariz.
  8. Reno, Nev.
  9. Knoxville, Tenn.
  10. Springfield, Mo. 

Not to be outdone, the safest cities for driving with populations exceeding one million people were: 

  1. Phoenix
  2. San Diego, Calif.
  3. San Antonio, Texas
  4. Chicago
  5. Houston
  6. Dallas
  7. New York, N.Y.
  8. Los Angeles, Calif.
  9. Philadelphia, Penn. 

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there is an average of 32,000 fatal crashes every year (32,885 fatalities in 2010). With the release of this latest report comes hope that drivers will become more aware of their driving behaviors and practice safety. 

Crashes could be reduced significantly in a number of ways, including the elimination of distractions and obeying traffic laws. This means putting away the cell phone, keeping both hands on the wheel and following the rules of the road.
