Study Finds Increased Risk of Death When Using Curbside Bus Carriers

According to New York Daily News, a new study from the National Transportation Safety Board finds there is an increased risk of death when using curbside bus carriers, which are considered to be a cheaper way of transporting individuals when compared to the traditional bus terminals.   The study indicates that, between January 2005 and March 2011, the rate of death for cheap, city-to-city curbside services was 7 times higher than conventional interstate bus services.   This study comes on the heels of a terrible bus crash that occurred March 12 on I-95, in the Bronx. In the wake of that crash, 15 passengers died and 18 were injured. Also, size matters, and so does experience, the study found. Twenty carriers with high accident rates or high inspection and violation rates operated just 17 buses on average and had been in business a median time of six years. The other 51 curbside operators in the study — which didn’t have high rates — had 63 buses on average and had been in business a median 16 years. The study did not list the names of the 20 bus carriers with higher rates of accidents and violations. However, despite the risks, many passengers aren’t willing to give up what is considered to be an economical way of traveling.  If you or a loved one was seriously or fatally injured in a bus crash, you should consult with a New York personal injury attorney to learn about your legal rights.
