Riverhead, NY Crash Kills One, Injures Two More

Car accidents are tragic events. There are some steps you can take to help avoid a car accident, but driving safety tips are not always foolproof. Recently, a man lost his life and two people were sent to the hospital after a collision in Riverhead, New York.

Two-Car Accident in Riverhead, NY

The accident happened shortly before noon Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the intersection of Route 25 and Doctors Path. An 86-year-old Jamesport woman was making a left turn at the intersection when her 1998 Ford sedan was struck on the passenger side by a 1995 Dodge Ram.

She was injured in the crash and had to be taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. Her husband, 90, was rushed to the hospital immediately following the accident, but was pronounced dead soon after.

The driver of the Ram, 23, of Greenport, suffered minor injuries. He was also transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, but has since been treated and released.

Vehicle Safety Means Constant Checks and Upkeep

As a driver, check your mirrors often to anticipate potential danger or hazards. Be aware of blind spots, too; check them before changing lanes. Of course, never take an unnecessary risk or violate a traffic law.

Regarding your vehicle, make sure it is properly maintained and suitable to be driven on highways and local roads alike. As the car’s primary driver, you should be familiar with and acknowledge its limitations. If you are driving an unfamiliar car, proceed cautiously.

How the State Police Help You

The New York State Police suggest you do all of the above to keep yourself safe, and they do their job in ensuring safety for drivers by:

  • working sobriety checkpoints;
  • patrolling the interstate highways;
  • monitoring sales at establishments that distribute alcohol; and
  • offering aid at the scenes of crimes.
