Pharmacist Mistake in Colorado Could Have Caused Woman to Miscarry

February 15, 2011 – Denver, Colorado – According to a report from AOL Health, a pregnant woman in Denver was accidentally given the wrong medication by a pharmacist at a Safeway pharmacy. Such a mix-up could have had potentially severe, or even fatal, consequences to both the mother and the child.  The woman was 6 weeks along in her first pregnancy when she went to the pharmacy on Feb. 3 to pick up antibiotics. Instead, she received a prescription meant for a 59-year-old woman who had the same last name and a similar first name.  Unknowingly, the pregnant woman took Methotrexate, a chemotherapy drug that is used to treat cancer, but is also used to terminate pregnancy in the early stages or to terminate tubal and ectopic pregnancies. Methotrexate is associated with a number of other serious side effects and should be taken only under close medical supervision. The woman became sick soon after ingesting the first dose of the incorrect medication. After taking a look at the prescription bottle she then realized it wasn’t her name. The woman was rushed to the hospital and given charcoal to absorb the medication.

The woman who received the incorrect medication because of a pharmacist mistake is now left with uncertainties about the safety of her unborn child. She will require close medical supervision to stay alert to any negative effects from this pharmacy error.
