Motorized Awnings Recalled Because of Electric Shock Hazard

November 23, 2010 – Following communications with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Somfy Systems Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of its motorized awnings because of a shock hazard. A user of the awning could be subjected to an electric shock risk when they attempt to manually open or close the awning. It is during this manual process that the awning motor’s cable could become pinched or severed, releasing an electric charge that could harm the user.  About 4,600 awnings are affected by this recall.

The affected units include the Sunea CMO RTS motor, which operates the retractable awnings for model numbers:

  • 525A2;
  • 535A2; and
  • 550R2.

The model number can be found on the motor tube.  The motor heads are labeled with the “Somfy” brand name. Only the silver and black motor heads have been included in this recall; those that are completely black are not being recalled.  The defective awnings were manufactured in France and sold in retail stores nationwide between December 2009 and September 2010.  Those in possession of the affected awnings are advised to cease use of the unit immediately. In efforts to safeguard those who may come near the awning, unplug the unit or flip the circuit breaker. Contact Somfy Systems immediately to receive an awning motor replacement, free of charge.  If you have been injured by this or another defective product, you deserve compensation.
