Man Awarded $90 Million in Asbestos Conspiracy Case

March 18, 2011 – McLean County, IL – According to Business Week, Charles Gillenwater was awarded $90 million by the McLean County, Illinois, jury against Owens-Illinois Inc. and 3 other companies for health-related injuries because of asbestos on March 11, 2011.  Gillenwater accused glass manufacturer Owens-Illinois, as well as Honeywell International Inc., Pneumo Abex, and John Crane Inc. of conspiring to conceal asbestos-related information and health risks from employees and the public.  Gillenwater worked at various locations in the 1970s as a pipe fitter, and contracted mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, takes decades to develop symptoms.  Owens-Illinois denies the conspiracy claims and stated that it will challenge the verdict. According to Business Week, the company said it feels it has preserved its position successfully in cases that are similar and is secure in the chances for a favorable outcome.  The McLean County jury’s verdict orders Owens-Williams to pay $40 million in punitive damages, as well as some of the the $9.6 million in compensatory damages that each of the 3 other companies must each pay.  When you have developed mesothelioma or another serious illness as a result of exposure to asbestos, you do have options. Talking with an asbestos lawyer will give you a better idea of whether you are eligible to file a claim to account for your medical expenses and diminished quality of life.
