Investigators Find Most Hospital Errors Are Never Reported

According to The New York Times, most hospital errors are never reported. In fact, according to federal investigators, just 1 in 7 hospital errors involving Medicare patients are discovered and reported. If you’ve been the victim of medical malpractice, seek legal counsel.  In addition, a new study finds that when hospitals are made aware of reported injuries and infections, safety initiatives are rarely implemented. When hospitals receive Medicare, they’re required to track errors made. They’re also expected to make any necessary changes.  Despite systems or protocols being in place to inform managers of the hospital when significant injuries or adverse events occur, medical staff aren’t following through. These aren’t just minor injuries or incidences not being reported. In some cases, even patient deaths haven’t been reported like incidences involving:

  • severe bedsores;
  • painkiller overdoses;
  • mistakes with medication;
  • excessive bleeding caused by improper use of blood thinners; and hospital-acquired infections.

The study found that in just 1 month’s time, more than 130,000 Medicare patients suffered some type of adverse event, which should have been reported. Medicare plans on developing a list of adverse events that should be brought to the attention of hospital administrators.  If you were the victim of a hospital error and suffered serious or life-threatening injuries, you should speak with a New York medical malpractice attorney as soon as possible.
