Gerber Gator Combo Axe Poses Laceration Hazard

April 15, 2011 – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Gerber Legendary Blades are recalling about 103,000 Gerber Gator Combo Axe sets because they pose a laceration hazard.  A 7-inch knife inside the handle of the axe can slip out when the axe is in motion, putting the user at risk for severe lacerations. Gerber Legendary Blades, based in Portland, Oregon is aware of 5 reports of consumers suffering lacerations. In each case, stitches were required.  The Gerber Gator Combo Axe, which was made in Taiwan, has a hollow handle used to hold the knife. The axe is roughly 8.75 inches long and the axe head 4.75 by 2.7 inches. The Gerber trademark is on the axe handle. This recall does not involve the Gerber Combo Axe II, which contains a saw in the axe handle.  The recalled Gerber Gator Combo Axe sets were sold at nationwide retailers such as The Sportsman’s Guide, Bass Pro Shops/American Rod & Gun, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and various online sites since March of 2005. The retail price ranged from $28 to $60.  Consumers are advised to remove the knife from the axe handle and call Gerber to get a free warning label and handle cap that will secure the knife during transport and storage. You can contact Gerber Legendary Blades at 1-877-314-9130.  If you have been the victim of a dangerous product, you might be able to hold the manufacturer and retailer accountable. It might be in your best interest to have a dangerous products attorney review your case.
