EPA Fines DuPont $3.3 Million for Chemical Health Risks

January 28, 2011 – The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently decided upon a $3.3 million enforcement action against DuPont Co., for failing to report the dangers of certain toxic chemicals. The action, which was announced on December 21, 2010 was meant to resolve DuPont’s 57 toxic substance violations.  The chemicals that DuPont used and that led to the EPA’s decision still remain unnamed, and were said to have been used in surface and masonry protection, water repellants, sealants and paints.  According to the EPA’s decision, 57 studies revealed data indicating that DuPont’s actions could pose risk of injury or harm to the environment and individuals. This was not the first time that the EPA has fined the DuPont Co.

In 2005, DuPont paid a record civil penalty of upwards of $10 million for hiding the dangers of another toxic chemical.  Also in the past, the United Steelworkers union discovered high quantities of the toxic chemical C8 in the water supplies of 6 U.S. states where DuPont had plants.  If you suspect that your health issues are the result of environmental violations in New York, you may be eligible for compensation in a personal injury claim.
