Elevator Violations a Serious Problem in New York City

According to a report from My Fox New York, elevator violations are a serious problem in New York City.  Suzanne Hart, a 41-year-old advertising executive, was killed on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011 in an elevator accident. Since then, concerns are being raised as to the safety of elevators that have received numerous violations. This particular elevator that killed Hart had received 56 violations.  While 56 may sound like a lot, that is just one example of many buildings in New York City where there are concerns for safety. In 2002, a 12-year-old boy lost his life when he fell 15 floors in an elevator shaft at 10 Richmond Plaza in the Bronx. Residents who use that elevator still express fear with the way it skips floors, or “jumps” up and down.  The city of New York has a list of defective elevators, including those that have received violations. Some of these come from field inspections and complaints.  When an individual is seriously or fatally injured on someone else’s property, the owner could potentially be held liable. If you or someone you love was a victim, you should consult with a New York premises liability attorney. You could be entitled to compensation for your medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and more.
