Elderly New Yorkers at High Risk for Pedestrian Accidents

If hit by a car, speak to a New York pedestrian accident attorney to go over your legal options to recover compensation for damages. According to My Fox NY, a study out of southern New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut finds that elderly pedestrians are at the greatest risk of being struck and killed.

Compared to individuals who are under the age of 60, those over the age of 60 are at double the risk of being killed by a car or truck. This risk was found to be linked to the elderly moving at a slower pace and, thus, their inability to move out of the way of oncoming traffic. Even at intersections with crosswalks, the lights may change before they are able to safely cross.

The study also found that roads with two or more lanes posed the greatest risk. The group that conducted the study is recommending that city planners consider these things to make intersections safer and not as difficult for the elderly to cross.
