Defective Crank Set in Bicycles Creates Crash Hazard

November 29, 2010 – In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Full Speed Ahead BB30 Gossamer crank sets for bicycles have been voluntarily recalled because of a crash risk posed to bike riders. The crank sets have been installed on several bike models. The risk occurs when the fixing bolt is over-tightened on the non-drive crank arm, which can cause the bolt shoulder to crack during use. The non-drive arm can then come loose from the bicycle, creating a crash hazard for riders. Such a crash could result in mild to serious injuries to the bicyclist.  Eleven incidents involving the defective crank sets have been reported to Full Speed Ahead. Consumers were injured in 2 of those incidents.  The following bicycle manufacturers produced models with the defective crank sets included in the original assembly:

  • Bianchi;
  • Cannondale;
  • Felt;
  • Fuji;
  • Quintana Roo;
  • Litespeed;
  • Raleigh; and
  • Scattante.

The full list of bicycles, including specific model numbers, can be found in the CPSC news release.  The defective crank sets were manufactured in Taiwan and assembled on bicycles sold nationwide between February and October 2010. Consumers are advised to cease use of the bicycles immediately. The affected bicycles may be taken to the dealer for a free non-drive crank set replacement.  If you or a loved one has been injured by the use of a defective or recalled product, you may be eligible for monetary compensation.
