Accidents on Long Island Reduced as a Result of Red-Light Cameras

According to a news report from Eyewitness News WABC-TV, accidents on Long Island have been shown to be reduced as a result of red-light cameras. These cameras are able to capture the image of a vehicle that runs a red light.  A study conducted by Nassau County revealed that after installing cameras at 40 intersections and collecting data over the course of 12 months, there have been decreases in the number of accidents.  The study shows a 6% decrease in rear-end crashes, 11% decrease in head-on collisions and a 30% decrease in side-impact crashes.  Despite these findings, there has actually been a significant increase (86%) in accidents at the entrance to the Roosevelt Field Mall, on Old Country Road and Ring Road. The report did not indicate whether or not there are red-light cameras at this intersection  For the most part, red-light cameras do appear to help reduce the amount of crashes.
