Head-On Crash in Grand Island Kills Three Michiganders

A car crash on Interstate 90 in Grand Island left three people dead and two more critically injury Monday, July 9, 2012.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the accident occurred at about 1 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 90. Officials said that Burhanur B. Rahman, 22, of Hamtramck, Mich., was driving his vehicle along the interstate when it was struck head-on by a vehicle that was travelling in the wrong direction.

Rahman’s three passengers, Shofiul Alom, 20, Nazim Khan, 21, and Rezwan Chowdhury, 21, were all killed in the accident. They were all from Hamtramck and died at the scene.

Both Rahman and the second driver, Richard Hildebrand, 87, were critically injured in the accident and had to be rushed to ECMC for treatment.

Because of accidents like this one, many people are suggesting that the State of New York require elderly drivers to be retested at specified intervals to reduce the likelihood of car accidents.
