Woman Sues Hospital for $5 Million for Sister’s Death

December 2, 2010 – Washington, D.C. – A woman is suing MedStar Health, the company that owns Georgetown University Hospital, for $5 million after her sister died in the hospital because of a liver transplant mix-up.  According to reports from 9 News Now, in 2008 Donna Roy, 59, was in Georgetown University Hospital, sick and awaiting a liver transplant. While she was in the hospital, an employee of the Georgetown Transplant Institute called her home phone to notify her that a new liver had become available. Roy was of course unable to receive this message and the liver ended up going to another patient. Roy died not much later, on Thanksgiving Day.  Dorothy Roy, Donna’s sister, filed a lawsuit for medical negligence on behalf of Donna’s estate this fall, nearly 2 years after her death.  Dorothy Roy said that doctors should have been aware that her sister was at Georgetown. To this day, she says she still does not know what happened to the liver or who received it.  The hospital spokesperson, Marianne Worley, confirmed that the message on Donna’s answering machine was in fact from the Georgetown Transplant Institute. Worley refused to comment further on the case.  Dorothy Roy says she plans to donate the money to Haiti should the court rule against MedStar Health.  The case is currently pending trial.
