Motorcycles Recalled Because of Fire, Crash Hazard

When people think of the dangers of riding a motorcycle, they usually think of the motorcycle’s size and vulnerability compared to other vehicles on the road and worry about what could happen in the case of an accident. But when the motorcycle has a manufacturing defect, just starting it can create a hazard.

KTM North America recently recalled Enduro motorcycles because of a defect in the fuel line.

The fuel hose can develop small cracks or holes during use, which could lead to fuel leakage creating a:

  • fire;
  • explosion;and
  • crash hazard.

So far, the company has received 13 reports of fuel leaks. Thankfully, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities associated with the recalled vehicles.

Specifics of the Recall

This recall affects seven 2013 models and one 2012 model, including both off-road and closed-course motorcycles. The motorcycles are black and orange in color and have “KTM” printed on the front number plate /headlight mask as well as both sides of the shrouds over the fuel tank.

The Enduro motorcycles cost $8,500 to $9,600 and were sold at KTM dealers nationwide between October 2011 and September 2012. The company estimates about 1,300 vehicles are affected by the recall.
