New Electronic Health Records May Lead to Prescription Errors

December 23, 2011 – AHRQ (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality) reports that the implementation of newer electronic health records may lead to prescription errors.  Many healthcare providers are upgrading from their older electronic health record systems to a new one that includes the capability of e-prescribing. The federal government is offering incentives for this move; however, it may not come without some safety problems. Recently a study found that even 12 weeks into the implementation of a new system, prescribing errors can occur. The rate of an error was highest at the 12 week interval. For every 100 prescriptions, 35.7 experienced an error. However, 1 year later it was found to be drastically reduced to 12.2 errors per 100 prescriptions.  The most common causes for the prescribing errors were mistakes with the abbreviations. The rate of these types of mistakes did drop as the system made corrections, however.  Doctors have mixed feelings when it comes to the safety of the newer electronic health records, with only a third believing it is better. Additionally, about two-thirds find the speed of ordering and refilling prescriptions is slower with the upgrade.
