OralGuard Mouthwash Recalled Because of Bacteria, Infection Risk

November 23, 2010 – Medimex, in cooperation with the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), has initiated a voluntary recall of an antiseptic mouthwash because of the presence of a potentially harmful contaminant, The Straits Times reports. The product, OralGuard Antiseptic-Antiplaque Mouthwash, has been found to contain the bacteria Burkholderia cepacia. Experts say that the bacteria should not cause any great harm to the average, healthy person. However, people with a weakened immune system could suffer a pneumonia-like lung infection upon ingestion of the bacteria. Burkholderia Cepacia can be especially deadly in a hospital setting, where people have especially low immune systems, or in people who have preexisting lung conditions.

The following batches of mouthwash have been affected by this recall:

  • 060813;
  • 070813; and
  • 080813.

Medimex, the product’s distributor, has declined to give an estimate as to how many units of the product have been affected by the recall. The infection-causing mouthwash was manufactured by Group Pharmaceuticals in India and sold nationwide through Medimex.  If you have been injured because of your use of this contaminated mouthwash or another dangerous or defective product, you may be able to gain a monetary settlement for your suffering. It would be in your best interest to contact an experienced product liability lawyer as soon as possible.
