UPDATE: At this time we are no longer accepting Victoza cases. However, if you feel that you have any additional questions about other dangerous drugs, recalls, or any additional legal concerns that we may help you with, please give us a call or fill out the free case evaluation form.

Novo Nordisk continues to defend its Type 2 diabetes drug Victoza against claims it significantly increases the risk of developing certain cancers. While there is already multidistrict litigation pending against Novo Nordisk and several other drug manufacturers who make this type of diabetes drug, others may still have a viable claim based on their cancer diagnosis. If you or a loved one received a pancreatic or thyroid cancer diagnosis while on or shortly after quitting Victoza, we may be able to recover compensation for you.
If you suffered serious health consequences you believe you can link to your Victoza prescription, a Victoza pancreatic cancer lawsuit lawyer at Gacovino, Lake & Associates, P.C. can explain your legal options based on the facts of your case. We may be able to hold Novo Nordisk liable for the damages you suffered if you developed pancreatic cancer after taking Victoza.

What Is the Problem with Victoza and Similar Type 2 Diabetes Drugs?

Victoza, which gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in January of 2010, helps control blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes. The drug is most effectively used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise. It is not effective or approved for use in those with Type 1 diabetes.
Victoza, otherwise known as liraglutide, is not without side effects. Reports to the FDA as well as the pending lawsuits link these drugs anecdotally to hundreds of cases of pancreatic cancer, and FDA studies in animals link them to the development of a specific thyroid cancer as well. These two cancers are aggressive and often deadly.
If you believe your use of Victoza led you to develop cancer, call our office and speak to one of our lawyers about your case as soon as possible. We can explain your legal options and help you pursue compensation if we believe you have a valid claim against the drug company.

What Warnings Does the FDA Require Regarding the Cancer Risks Associated with Victoza?

The FDA requires Victoza to carry a boxed warning on its label and other drug information materials that announce the link between the medication and the development of thyroid tumors and cancer in mice and rats. The label clarifies that the risk to humans is unknown, but that this type of cancer is often fatal if not recognized, diagnosed, and treated early. The information provided by Novo Nordisk about the drug warns users to report their symptoms immediately to their doctor if they develop a lump in the neck, swelling, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, or other symptoms.
Because of clinical trials on similar Type 2 diabetes medications, the FDA also notes that Victoza might cause pancreatitis and even pancreatic cancer. Many of these studies focus on the drug Januvia, which works in the same way as Victoza. The FDA is continuing to monitor studies and research into these medications, and may issue a warning in the future if there is evidence of this link in large studies.

What is the Current Status of the Victoza Pancreatic Cancer Lawsuits?

The courts consolidated the cases filed against Novo Nordisk into MDL No. 2452, adding them to similar suits filed against Merck & Co., Inc. regarding their medications Januvia and Janumet. Plaintiffs allege these Type 2 diabetes drugs caused them to develop pancreatic cancer and other related health concerns. The multidistrict litigation proceeded in California federal court, with Judge Anthony J. Battaglia presiding.
The drug companies requested a summary judgement in November 2015 and Judge Battaglia granted it. This dismissed all cases in the MDL. However, the victims struck back, filing an appeal. As of November 2017, they continue to wait on a decision from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
In the meantime, we continue to accept new cases against Novo Nordisk and other manufacturers of this type of diabetes drug. If you believe Victoza or another similar diabetes drug caused your thyroid cancer, acute pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, or other major health condition, do not hesitate to reach out to us. We will evaluate your case, and can file a lawsuit on behalf of clients with viable claims.
