Generically known as quetiapine, Seroquel is an oral antipsychotic medication that alters the brain's chemicals to help treat schizophrenia, bipolar mania and bipolar depression. In some cases, Seroquel may also be prescribed in the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, insomnia or anxiety disorders, though this drug is not explicitly FDA approved to do so.

FDA Warns Consumers About Dangerous Side Effects

Seroquel has been reported to cause a range of severe side effects that, in the worst cases, can result in fatality. In fact, since 2005, the FDA has issued three different warnings regarding Seroquel:

• In 2005, the FDA alerted the public that Seroquel increased the risk of death in patients over 65 who also suffer from dementia
• In 2006, the FDA warned that Seroquel was associated with suicidal tendencies in children
• In 2007, the FDA announced that Seroquel was known to cause suicidal tendencies in children, adolescents and adults

Seroquel Side Effects

Though rare, severe, life-threatening side effects of Seroquel include:

• Blood sugar disorders, including diabetes
• Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a potentially fatal neurological condition accompanied by fever, delirium, muscle rigidity and balance
• Tardive dyskinesia, an incurable condition marked by involuntary movements, such as grimacing, rapid eye blinking and rapid movements of the extremities

Who Is At Risk?

Those who have a medical history of any of the following conditions typically have a higher risk of developing Seroquel side effects and, as a result, should discuss their medical history with their doctor before starting a course of Seroquel:

• Dementia
• Difficulty swallowing
• Epilepsy
• Heart problems
• High cholesterol
• Hypertension
• Liver or kidney disease
• Low white cell blood counts
• Stroke
• Thyroid disorders

While some of these patients may be prescribed an altered dose of Seroquel, many will be prescribed an alternative medication due to their extremely high risk of developing severe side effects.
