Generically known as metoclopramide, Reglan is an oral medication that, by increasing the rate of muscle contractions in the upper digestive tract, helps treat heartburn (cause by gastrointestinal reflux), as well as slow gastric emptying (in people with diabetes). Slow gastric emptying is typically accompanied by nausea, loss of appetite and heartburn.

Reglan is produced by Schwarz Pharma and has been on the market in the U.S. (and FDA approved) since June 1985. Other brand names of Reglan include:

Reglan Side Effects

• Neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a possibly fatal neurological disorder marked by fever, muscle stiffness and/or delirium
• Tardive dyskinesia, a condition that causes symptoms similar to Parkinson's diesase, such as repetitive involuntary movements
