Mirapex Drug Information
Generically known as pramipexole, Mirapex is an oral medication prescribed in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and restless legs syndrome (RLS). Mirapex is produced by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration since June 1997.
In its off-label uses, Mirapex has been used to treat cluster headaches and sexual dysfunction associated with the use of antidepressants. Currently, researchers are investigating the effectiveness of Mirapex for bipolar disorder, depression and fibromyalgia.
Mirapex Side Effects
Mirapex has been linked to several side effects, ranging from minor to severe. Minor side effects of this medication include:
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness and/or fatigue
- Fluctuations in appetite and/or weight
- Hallucinations
- Insomnia
- Involuntary movements, such as twitching or writhing
- Lightheadedness and/or fainting
- Nausea
Rarely, Mirapex patients have reported developing serious emotional side effects, particularly compulsive, pleasure-seeking disorders, in patients with no history of these conditions. Other dangerous Mirapex side effects may include:
- Arrhythmia
- Compulsive gambling
- Compulsive shopping
- Hypersexuality
- Narcolepsy
- Overeating
- Severe allergic reaction
- Strong, involuntary muscle contractions (especially in the neck, jaws, eyes or tongue)
Although Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals has denied that the above disorders are side effects of Mirapex, in 2005, the company included a warning label on all Mirapex packaging to alert patients that this drug could cause impulse-control disorders.
