Food Poisoning
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), approximately 76 million Americans experience food poisoning each year. Of these, about 325,000 individuals require hospitalization and 5,000 will ultimately die as a result of their food-induced infections.
Although changes in the food supply as well as better safety methods and processing procedures have significantly reduced the incidence and impact of food poisoning in modern times, many people still endure painful food-induced illnesses. If you or a loved one has suffered from food poisoning (or a loved one has died as a result of food poisoning), contact Gacovino, Lake & Associates to see if you qualify to seek compensation for your injuries and losses.
We are passionate about defending the rights of those who have endured serious personal injuries and will do everything we can to build you a strong case and help you recover the compensation you need and deserve.
What Causes Food Poisoning?
People can develop food poisoning after ingesting:
- Infectious substances, such as bacteria, fungi, parasites and/or viruses
- Toxic agents, including poisonous mushrooms, poisonous fish and/or pesticides
While such agents may remain on food that is not properly cleaned or prepared, in other cases, food handlers (including inspectors, chefs, grocery store employees, etc.) may contaminate the food by not washing their hands, improperly storing food, etc.
Symptoms of Food Poisoning
The precise symptoms a person will experience when he/she has developed food poisoning will depend on the nature and severity of the condition. In most cases, however, food poisoning symptoms include:
- abdominal pain
- dehydration
- diarrhea
- fatigue
- headache
- jaundice
- loss of appetite
- low-grade fever
- muscle aches
- nausea and/or vomiting
